Study: Bacteria live even in healthy placentas

WASHINGTON (AP) — Surprising new research shows a small but diverse community of bacteria lives in the placentas of healthy pregnant women, overturning the belief that fetuses grow in a pretty sterile environment.

These are mostly varieties of "good germs" that live in everybody. But Wednesday's study also hints that the make-up of this microbial colony plays a role in premature birth.
"It allows us to think about the biology of pregnancy in different ways than we have before, that pregnancy and early life aren't supposed to be these totally sterile events," said lead researcher Dr. Kjersti Aagaard of Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.

We share our bodies with trillions of microbes — on the skin, in the gut, in the mouth. These communities are called our microbiome, and many bacteria play critical roles in keeping us healthy, especially those in the intestinal tract. A few years ago, the government's Human Microbiome Project mapped what makes up these colonies and calculated that healthy adults cohabitate with more than 10,000 species.

Healthy newborns pick up some from their mother during birth, different bugs depending on whether they were delivered vaginally or by C-section.

What about before birth? There have been some signs that the process could begin in-utero.
But, "we have traditionally believed in medicine that the uterus is a sterile part of the human body," said Dr. Lita Proctor of the National Institutes of Health, who oversaw the microbiome project.
With the new research, "we realize that microbes may play a role even in fetus development," added Proctor, who wasn't involved in the work. "The results of this study now open up a whole new line of research on maternal and pediatric health."

Aagard's team earlier had studied the microbiome of the vagina, and learned that its composition changes when a woman becomes pregnant. The puzzle: The most common vaginal microbes weren't the same as the earliest gut bacteria that scientists were finding in newborns.

What else, Aagaard wondered, could be "seeding" the infants' intestinal tract?
With colleagues from Baylor and Texas Children's Hospital, Aagaard analyzed 320 donated placentas, using technology that teases out bacterial DNA to evaluate the type and abundance of different microbes.

The placenta isn't teeming with microbes — it harbors a low level, Aagaard stressed. Among them are kinds of E. coli that live in the intestines of most healthy people.
But to Aagaard's surprise, the placental microbiome most resembled bacteria frequently found in the mouth, she reported in the journal Science Translational Medicine. The theory: Oral microbes slip into the mother's bloodstream and make their way to the placenta.

Why does the body allow them to stay? Aagaard said there appears to be a role for different microbes. Some metabolize nutrients. Some are toxic to yeast and parasites. Some act a bit like natural versions of medications used to stop preterm contractions, she said.
In fact, among the 89 placentas that were collected after preterm births, levels of some of the apparently helpful bacteria were markedly lower, she said.

Aagaard is beginning a larger study to explore the link, planning to analyze the oral and placental microbiomes of more than 500 pregnant women at risk of preterm birth.

California woman found 10 years after kidnapping

SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — A woman who was 15 when she disappeared 10 years ago from her California home contacted police and told them she was held against her will for years, sexually assaulted repeatedly and had a child with her captor, authorities said Wednesday.
Police have arrested Isidro Garcia, 41, of Bell Gardens, on suspicion of kidnapping for rape, lewd acts with a minor and false imprisonment, according to a statement from the Santa Ana Police Department.

In 2004, when the victim was 15, Garcia was dating her mother and lived with the family, authorities said. Her mother suspected that he was sexually abusing her daughter, police said. In June 2004, Garcia assaulted the mother, drugged the girl and then fled with her to a house in Compton, locking her in a garage, the statement said.

Garcia provided the girl with false identification and used physical and emotional abuse to prevent her from fleeing, police said. Garcia repeatedly told the victim her family had given up looking for her, and they moved frequently to avoid being found, the statement said.

Police say Garcia forced her into marriage in 2007 and they had a child in 2012. Garcia secured two jobs for them on a night cleaning crew so he could keep watch over her, police said.
The woman, now 25, came forward to police after finding her sister on Facebook and told her story to officers on Tuesday, according to the police statement.

It wasn't clear if Garcia, who has not been formally charged, had an attorney. The case has been presented to the Orange County district attorney's office for consideration.

Six brothers charged with sexually abusing North Carolina girl for 10 years; parents watched

jackson-family

Six grown brothers and their parents have been arrested in North Carolina and charged with multiple counts of sexually abusing a child over a 10-year period. The arrests came more than a year after the eldest brother came forward and confessed at the urging of his church elder.

“He sinned seriously. It was an evil that needed to be exposed,” Dan Horn of Hope Baptist Church in Wake Forest, N.C., told the Virginia Pilot. Eric Jackson, 27, the man who had confessed, and his five brothers — Jon, 25, Matthew, 23, Nathaniel, 21, Benjamin, 19, and Aaron, 18 — were arrested last week after they surrendered to Perquimans County Sheriff's deputies on charges they molested and raped a girl from the time she was 4 until she was about 14, Sheriff Eric Tilley told the newspaper.

The girl is now 16 and living in Colorado Springs. The multiple charges range from statutory rape to rape and sexual assault. The men's parents, John Jackson, 65, and Nita Jackson, 54, were charged with felony child abuse for allegedly knowing of the sex crimes and doing nothing about it.

The brothers were home-schooled along with the girl, authorities said. Some of the men appeared to have below-average intelligence levels and one could barely write his name, WVEC-TV reported.
Deputies tried to question the girl and her parents after Eric Jackson confessed to the abuse, but the girl's parents would not allow her to speak to investigators, Perquimans County Sheriff Eric Tilley told the station.

They, and most of the Jackson family, moved to Colorado after the investigation became public.
Earlier this year, deputies flew to Colorado and spent eight hours questioning the girl. Indictments were issued in April. The Jacksons surrendered in North Carolina last week rather than face extradition hearings.

After posting $15,000 bonds, the parents returned to Colorado, Tilley said.
The brothers remain in custody at Albermarle District Jail, in lieu of bail up to $150,000 each.
"The only thing that can come out of this — good — is that, you know, this young lady gets some kind of closure, and, hopefully, she's strong enough … to put it behind her and go on with her life," Tilley said, according to the station.

Transgender Woman Arrested Trying to Perform Oral Sex on a Horse

bestiality
A woman has been arrested on bestiality charges after allegedly placing an ad on Craigslist in which she expressed her desire to “play with a horse”.

The 22-year-old who identifies as transgender, was booked under her birth name of Donald Waelde, the Phoenix New Times writes.

Waelde's advert went into the “Missed Connections” section and stated she was looking for a male horse “on which to commit the act of fellatio”, the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office revealed.
The advert was listed on 8 April and read in full:
“I am 22-years-old and I want to play with a male Horse. Simple as that. If you have access to a Male horse, and can allow me access to a male horse, then contact me please I will do something in return.”

A genuine horse enthusiast spotted the ad and reported it to the authorities.
Waelde was arrested after officials organised a meeting with her, bringing along a horse from the Sheriff’s Mounted Posse as a prop, AZ Central writes.
A police statement states Waelde admitted posting the ad and her intentions and was taken into custody. Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio told KTAR TV: “Cases like these are tough to talk about, but we will always go after those who commit sex acts with animals"

V. Stiviano's Arrest Record

V. Stiviano -- who is currently under investigation for extortion -- is no stranger to the criminal justice system.  She's been arrested for at least 4 crimes and has used 5 aliases, and she's a true chameleon, changing her race from crime to crime.

2002 -- Stiviano was arrested by LAPD for petty theft.  The official documents -- obtained by TMZ -- show she was a 5'4" 128 lb Hispanic woman named Vanessa Maria Perez.  She was convicted and placed on probation.

2004 -- Stiviano was arrested by Santa Monica PD for another petty theft and felony burglary.  Her name was Vanessa Maria Perez (same as the first) but this time she's taller and thinner -- a 5'8" 115 lb Hispanic woman.

2010 -- Stiviano was arrested by LAPD for possession of a controlled substance -- a felony.  This time she's Vanessa Maria Perez again, but she's black, weighing in at 5'7" and 125 lbs.

2012 -- Stiviano was busted by CHP for DUI.  This time she was booked as Monica Gallegos, a 5'7" 110 lb black woman.  We don't know the disposition.

In addition to Vanness Maria Perez and Monica Gallegos, court records show she also used the names Maria Valdez, Maria Vanessa Perez and Mariamonica Perez Gallegos.  She's currently going by V. Stiviano.

Now it's clear why Donald Sterling was so confused about her race in the recording.
